Every day, hundreds of women still die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, and millions of newborns die or are stillborn each year. Most of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries and could be prevented with timely, quality care.
This session looks at the full continuum of care from pregnancy through the first weeks of life, and at what works to improve survival and wellbeing. It brings together midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists, public health professionals and researchers.
Key topics include antenatal care and screening, high-risk pregnancy and health education for high-risk clients, maternal mortality and morbidity, early neonatal outcomes after caesarean birth, preterm birth and low birth weight, stillbirth prevention, infections in pregnancy including COVID-19 and their effects on the placenta and baby, maternal nutrition and undernutrition, obstetric fistula, national health survey data on maternal care, and newborn care and resuscitation.
We welcome clinical and population studies, systematic reviews, program evaluations and case studies. Participants will gain evidence and ideas to help end preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
