Obstetric Emergencies and PPH

Postpartum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders and infection remain the leading direct causes of maternal death worldwide. Most of these deaths can be prevented when emergencies are recognized early and managed quickly by skilled, well-equipped teams.

This session focuses on the prevention, early detection and treatment of life-threatening complications in pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. It is designed for midwives, obstetricians, nurses, emergency teams, educators and health planners.

Key topics include postpartum haemorrhage and the latest international guidance, early detection with calibrated drapes and treatment bundles such as E-MOTIVE, tranexamic acid and uterotonics, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, maternal sepsis, obstructed labour, emergency caesarean birth, maternal resuscitation, referral and transport systems, blood availability, simulation and drills for emergency training, and maternal death surveillance and review.

We invite clinical studies, implementation research, training evaluations and case reports. Attendees will gain practical skills and system-level strategies to respond effectively when emergencies happen.
