Perinatal Mental Health

Up to one in five women experience a mental health condition during pregnancy or in the year after birth. Perinatal depression and anxiety affect not only the mother but also the baby's development and the whole family, yet they often go unrecognized and untreated.

This session focuses on prevention, early identification and support for mental health during the perinatal period. It brings together midwives, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, obstetricians and researchers.

Key topics include postpartum depression and anxiety, perinatal mental health screening, childbirth education and salutogenic approaches that build resilience, support for teenage and adolescent mothers, birth trauma and fear of childbirth, the impact of social isolation, violence and poverty, partner and family involvement, mental health after pregnancy loss, integrating mental health into routine maternity care, and digital and community-based support.

We welcome trials, cohort studies, qualitative research and program evaluations. Attendees will gain practical strategies to protect and support the mental health of mothers and families.
