Every woman has the right to be treated with dignity and respect during pregnancy and childbirth. Yet many women around the world report disrespect, neglect or abuse during facility-based care, which harms their wellbeing and discourages them from seeking care in future.
This session explores what respectful maternity care means in practice and how health systems can make it the norm. It brings together midwives, obstetricians, researchers, advocates, educators and policymakers.
Key topics include women's experiences and perceptions of maternity care, measuring respectful care, preventing mistreatment and obstetric violence, informed consent and shared decision-making, privacy and confidentiality, culturally safe care, birth justice and reproductive equity for marginalized groups including women in prison, care for women with disabilities, the role of birth companions, staff wellbeing and its link to respectful care, and policy and accountability mechanisms.
We welcome qualitative and quantitative research, community-centred frameworks, training interventions and advocacy experiences. Participants will leave with ideas to build care that every woman can trust.
